Hi Emily,

I won’t be able to stop by on Monday due to a scheduling conflict in Winters. Scoot or Crista will be present and can provide further information or gather your further questions so we can review them.

Thanks for your reply Mark. This Friday we'll be spending some time thinking and drawing. I believe the following Monday will be our general meeting if you'd like to stop by and speak further with us then.

Be in touch with you soon.

Best always,

Emily

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the working on this project.

Here are my comments in response to your questions:

I have asked Scott and the Davis branch staff to design a plan for the new maker space. This plan will include their vision for how the space will be used, the equipment to be used in the space, where items will/can be securely stored, and how we will determine outcomes to measure success.

The budget for the project is $10,000 to reconfigure the space so it meets the project needs. This funding will pay for combining the teen space and the adjacent study room, new Maker-friendly flooring, secured storage, and any other upgrades we need to accommodate odors/fumes/etc.

The library will need to finalize insurance and liability with an MOU. I understand there is some draft language that has been shared. Eventually we will need to take the draft MOU to County Counsel for review and approval.

The team of staff at the Davis Branch Library will decide the Maker space project priorities, including how the space will be used, how often it should be staffed with volunteers, and how frequently programs are offered and how we define “success”. You can work with them directly to establish and agree on these priorities with your team.

Please let me know if you have further questions or concerns.

Best,

Mark

Hello all,

Thank you Emily for the kind introduction!

I am wondering what the process is for the Friends of Library for this project? Is it going through a number of committees and vetting? We are curious about the timeline of when the makerspace my be up and running for the community. We were considering sending in a minimalist request for the space now and getting setting up with just a tool lending system for example and then delaying the renovation until next year so that way we all have more time to really think through the process and determine what our needs are. However, we are not sure whether there is a certain window in which we need to act for the renovation and a delay for next year may create the situation where we lose funding?

We are also wondering if we can get assistance on visualizing the different plans in terms of a budget. For example, if the upper limit is 10 K, then our fully fleshed out version would look very different than if the upper limit was 100K. We are also considering submitting a request in the form of prioritized needs and then the library can see how many they can meet and then run a cost analysis on that.

We were also wondering what sort of work we need to do on safety and liability concerns. Are we expected to factor that into the budget as well? Or does the library have connections to determine these things?

Lots of awesome questions to ponder as we undergo this wonderful process of bringing to Davis and indispensable space for community benefit.

Dear Crista, Scott and Mark,

We hope all is well with you and the rest of the library! To give you an update on where we are in our idea-building process this month, we are still dividing our wishlist into the three plans (fully flushed out, middle of the road, and minimal) and have yet to come up with diagrams to go along with each possibility. You can see our project page here:

https://wiki.davismakerspace.org/library-possibilities

Since I have other obligations that make it hard to be a point of contact for this project, Allen has kindly volunteered to pick up the slack. I believe he has some additional questions for you regarding how big our vision should be in our diagrams, if the library includes a budget for consumables (ongoing), and other questions.

Thanks for your time and best wishes,

Emily
