Hi All

SO I am looking at the 1930 5th ST Space I mentioned at the last meeting.

They are renovating the apce currently witha timeline for tenants in
october. I did see some potential shared use space, specifically
warehouse portion with office and am wondering if itsa good fit for the
organization.

So am trying to get a sense of the following:

How much money can be thrown down to go in on a space at
this point? If it were to materialize in Oct/Nov ?

and

What kind of power requirements for a CNC drill press? Or
just general estimate power requirements? Special outlets?
            That sort of thing

I think I have a good answer on numer 2 here from Steve Brennan

I have set up several shops, and recently rewired my house including
putting in a small shop. There are a lot of variables to consider. If
you already have the space, the you need to do an inventory of the power
outlets available and whatsort of service there is to the shop. If you
are shopping for spaces, you want to have in mind the equipment you will
be using. Running new power isn't the end of the world, but can be
costly. The normal 110v, 30A outlets that you find in your garage can
usually power up to contractor grade tools, but true industrial tools
will start at 220V, but are usually 277V 3phase, 480V 3phase, etc. If
you are just starting out, you can usually get by with a bunch of 110V
30A, and one or two 220V split phase (typical house power) or 3 wire for
the odd big saw or welder, or even a big mill. I haven't been able to
make it to a meeting yet since I teach welding on Monday nights, so I'm
not sure where things are at. If you have a list of equipment that folks
are talking about wanting, send it to me and I can match it up with
power requirements. Again, if you want to build a true shop (mills,
lathes, etc) and go out bargain hunting, you may end up with equipment
with very strange power requirements. I think the scale you guys are
looking at means 90% 110V 30A, and 10% 220V 40 or 50A. Note: a 110 only
shop will greatly limit your tool choices. You can email me at

> Name of the space. "Davis Community Workshop" is only a neutral placeholder name. The negative image of "hackers" makes the term "hackerspace" cause a loss of time and energy to explain during outreach. We could still associate ourselves with the larger "hackerspace" community via the eventual website, where it would be easy to provide an immediate link and explanation. We discussed how to generate a list of names. Consensus was to brainstorm over email and record the list on a Davis wiki page. We'll deal with how to choose from the list once it exists.

> Recap of Spacecamp and Maker Faire. Braden summarized his time at the Spacecamp meeting of maker/hackerspace facilitators and founders. He listed the varied models of the 11 represented spaces, and some suggestions from a breakout session about starting a space. Jordan recounted talking with some hackerspace members at Maker Faire from PS:One, Hacker Dojo, and Noisebridge. Robbie talked about American Steel. Others talked of attending Maker Faire.

> Space. The discussion continued on topic of the different types of spaces that exist. Talked some about security in the space, and what beyond locked doors could be used to protect tools. Some talk of what spaces are available in Davis. Olive drive spaces brought up as large and less than $1/sq.ft.

> Startup / Money. Other groups started collecting dues before they had a space. Suggestion that we could do this plus offer membership discount for those who paid in before there was a space. Other models for funding: Davis Food Co-op, Davis Studio / Torpedo Factor Art Center. Could start classes before there is a space. We could start a list of potential spaces, of what people would like out of the space, and of what they could put into the space. We will make a wiki page for depositing this information. Stress was put on the need for good management for the space.
>
> Mission / Governance. Discussion turned to trying to develop a shared group identity. The aforementioned list of what we'd like to put into and get out of a space helps here. Also, finding a project to do together had good support as a way to generate a group identity. We added projects as another thing to list on the wiki page.
