I still call the Bike Church the Church. Some people call Bike Forth the Forth. Some call it the Bike Collective. These are different ideas of the space, and are not set in stone.

The Bike Collective is the 501c3 organization, the one paying the bills. It can accept grants on the behalf of informal groups, it buys insurance, tools (infrequently). Bike Forth is the (still new to me) garage, new people, and a different ways of running the shop using forms and price tags and food. The Bike Church is a bunch of friendly anarchists hanging out in a garage, with ministerial titles.

These mean different things (to me). I think y'all should grab the name DavisMakerSpace, and use it for 501c3, urls, paperwork. Then you can call the shop/projects whatever you want. Maybe a shop just east of downtown is the Collabolab, with a more structured approach and more fab robots. The FabFarm might be the welding shop, more on the edge of town with some gardens and a scrap yard. Maybe the cool names ought to come from what the project is, while the boring name is useful for boring stuff.

One name provides a rigid consistency that is easy to understand but belies a dynamic and complex process of resource centralization. It is a shill through which to interface with rigid structures like the IRS, the landlord, and DNS.
my thinking here is that we should do one more vote across
the wider group, with only the top five selected from the
last vote.
That said, there was a lot discussed about different
aspects of name selection, most notably:
--Domain name availability
--Desire to select something soon, so other projects can
be worked on (like centralizing our activities online)
--None of the top five names appear to have any funny
acronyms or unfortunate irregularities, and all five would
be workable, (if anybody not attending last meeting is
seeing anything weird like that, please alert the group).
Regarding domain name availability, we did some quick
searches online during the meeting. We tried different
option but for simplicity, below is a list of available
domains using the each of the top five names without
spaces (by far, not an exhaustive search, but if you're
curious about other options, please look them up and share
with the group).

fellow hacker/maker/creators,

i personally would prefer any of those other
names over the current davis makerspace. if we
want to attract the creative we should name
ourselves creatively... to have "davis" in our
name is redundant in my opinion .... makerspace is
similarly blah. i would opt for a more creative
name with davis makersspace in the tagline. like
"ignitors; a davis makerspace since 2012" o
whatever oher name we choose. I'm continually
haunted that we chose DBC (Davis bike collctive)
as our official title for the non profit since
moving from the Davis Bike Church (also DBC as is
davis bike club). i am so gald we named the shop
Bike Forth ... while confusing it is much better
than what could have been.

I belive the same is true for us. i would much
rather explain our position till it is so well
known it needs no explaination rather than having
a blah blah name that doesn't inspire those that
might have otherwise been inspired.

While I initially started out liking the more
descriptive names, the
more I thought about it the more I gravitated
towards the more
dynamic-sounding names, eg Ignitor. I'm fine
with the process we went
I'm also amenable to
reconsidering if there is a significant
objection. One other alternative
would be to use another name as a tagline...eg,
Davis Makerspace -
Igniting Curiosity since 2012! (or, Attracting
the Strange since
2012...Farming the Fab since 2012...etc).
